Our ever-popular interview series, People Not Products, continues with John Kerr. John is one of our Senior Account Managers with over 30 years of experience. Here we have John discuss his passions and what drives him to succeed!
Can you tell us a bit about your career journey and what led you to Aspen Solutions?
With 30 years of experience in procurement and IT sales, I’ve built a career rooted in strategic sourcing and technology-driven growth. After 7 years in procurement, I transitioned into IT sales, where I’ve spent 23 years delivering enterprise solutions, driving innovation, and building lasting client relationships. Having previously worked at Aspen Solutions during their early entry into the IT market in 2004, I witnessed their foundational growth and innovation firsthand. Their impressive expansion and evolving vision inspired me to rejoin the company in 2017.
What does a typical day in your role look like, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I thrive on building strong client relationships and genuinely enjoy the collaborative nature of my role. Whether engaging via phone or Microsoft Teams, I take pride in understanding client needs, sourcing the right solutions, and delivering compelling quotes and proposals that meet and exceed expectations. This client-focused approach not only drives results but also makes my work deeply rewarding.
What’s been your most memorable moment or achievement at Aspen Solutions so far?
It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness the company secure major contracts and play an active role in its significant expansion. Being part of this transformative growth has not only deepened my professional experience but also reinforced my commitment to driving impactful results within a thriving organisation.
What skills or qualities do you think are essential for success in your role?
Leveraging strong active listening, empathy, and communication skills, proactively identify client needs, anticipate challenges, and deliver strategic, personalised solutions that build trust and long-term success.
How would you describe the culture at Aspen Solutions, and what makes it a great place to work?
Our culture is currently undergoing a dynamic transition driven by rapid expansion, and I’m genuinely excited to see where this evolution leads us.
What advice would you give to someone looking to build a career in your field?
I would build a strong foundation in tech, master consultative selling, and grow into a trusted advisor—driving value for clients and advancing toward leadership in IT sales.
When you’re not at work, how do you like to unwind and relax?
Whether I’m mixing beats with my DJ and music kit, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, or heading out for long, soul-refreshing dog walks, I love exploring creativity in all its forms. Life’s better with a great soundtrack, delicious food, and a loyal pup by your side.
