Meet Scott – People Not Products

17 April 2026

Scott Watson

Scott Watson started his IT journey around 12 years ago with an IT apprenticeship at a plumbing and heating company. Here we have his People Not Products interview talking about his journey so far and what motivates him!

1. Career Journey

I started my IT journey around 12 years ago with an IT apprenticeship at a plumbing and heating company. It was a great foundation, as it gave me exposure to office-based IT challenges and the day-to-day issues staff encounter. I was able to shadow the existing IT team, and when they moved to another part of the business, I took the reins.
After completing my apprenticeship and gaining more experience, I moved to an FMCG company in the city centre where I spent six years maintaining their IT equipment. During this time, I learned a lot about internal networks, servers, and, most importantly, disaster recovery.
I then moved into my first MSP role, where I really began to understand how MSPs operate and the variety of work they offer. It was fast-paced and pushed me to keep learning. After three years there, I moved to Aspen and haven’t looked back. I wasn’t actively job-hunting, but the progression paths and opportunities Aspen showed me convinced me to make the move.

2. Typical Day

In this role, I’d love to know what a “typical day” looks like, because right now  every day feels different! We’ve got a lot of projects running at the moment, so each day brings something new. It could be a task I’ve done before, or something completely new that requires research. I really enjoy the variety and the mix of challenges.

3. Memorable Moment

My most memorable moment has to be supporting the Amante project. I provided networking support across seven sites with live work happening around the clock. The pace and coordination were incredible, and the amount of work we completed in just one week—fully upgrading IT and networking equipment across seven hotels nationwide—was unbelievable. I supported three of those tranches and would do it again in a heartbeat.

4. Keys to Success in the Role

To succeed in this role, I think you need to be very open. “No” shouldn’t be in your vocabulary, and being flexible goes a long way. Communication is also vital. Sharing both good and bad news keeps everyone aligned. Good news shows awareness and progress; bad news helps the team collaborate and solve problems quickly.

5. Working at Aspen

I love working at Aspen, and a big part of that is the feeling around the place. All the teams feel aligned, which makes everything smoother. Communication is strong, and there are no surprises. Our frequent team meetings help bring everyone together and keep us moving in the same direction.

6. Advice for Others

As I mentioned earlier, being open and transparent is essential. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes—they’re going to happen, and they’re valuable learning tools. Strong communication skills help you grow, learn, and stay accountable.

7. Outside of Work

Outside of work, I enjoy going for long runs. I haven’t had much chance recently, but when I do, it’s a great way to unwind. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family on the weekends.
