Meet Iain – People Not Products

23 July 2025

Iain Campbell IT Helpdesk Lead Scotland

Our next person on the People Not Products series is the excellent Iain Campbell, who is the IT Helpdesk Team Lead. Check out his interview below about his career discussing the IT Support and cyber security world.

Can you tell us a bit about your career journey and what led you to Aspen Solutions?
I graduated from university with a 1st class honours degree in Cyber Security & Networking in 2016 and started working at another MSP. They provided IT Support only and I had an opportunity to learn about Broadband & VoIP installations and support which made me interested in applying to Aspen.

What does a typical day in your role look like, and what do you enjoy most about it?
Every day within service is different, you can be working on anything from major site down issues, migration projects, to normal helpdesk work. I enjoy the fast-paced environment & working with a vast variety of customers in all industries.

What’s been your most memorable moment or achievement at Aspen Solutions so far?
I passed the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert certification last year, after not having many certifications behind me in the past I’ve recently started doing more directed certifications in Microsoft 365, and Azure infrastructure. Having done many 365 tenant migrations at my time in Aspen, it’s great to see the seamless transition from a customer’s old infrastructure to Microsoft 365.

What skills or qualities do you think are essential for success in your role?
Time management and being able to handle high speed working environments is crucial to being able to work within Service for an MSP. It may seem very overwhelming at times however if you can communicate with customers and prioritise the work that comes in, it is much more manageable.
You also must have a good sense of spatial awareness and have an overview of what is happening within service if something needs escalating.

How would you describe the culture at Aspen Solutions, and what makes it a great place to work?
Aspen is a fast paced and friendly business to work for and offers many benefits – from hybrid working to having regular team events, monthly lunch get together events, and frequent work nights out.

What advice would you give to someone looking to build a career in your field?
Never be afraid to ask questions & always remember that nobody knows everything – if you’re on a job that you are not certain on how to find a solution to a problem, talk to other engineers around you. Communication is key in any industry; IT is no different.
Always be willing to learn something new, you never know what you may end up enjoying – from working with Servers, Networking, VoIP solutions, Microsoft 365, Power automate, etc.
This industry can have a daunting ‘sink or swim’ feel to it, however with the right team & support around you, you will enjoy the fast paced nature of the job.

When you’re not at work, how do you like to unwind and relax?
I am very family orientated, my partner & I have 3 boys and there is never a dull moment in the house!
