Meet Callum – People Not Products
5 May 2026
We have Callum Kilgour, Senior Field Engineer, talk about what it takes to succeed in our industry including strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under time pressure.
Can you tell us a bit about your career journey and what led you to Aspen Solutions?
I completed my HND in Computing Networking in 2017, and shortly after graduating I began my career in IT. I quickly developed a real passion for communications technology, working across the northeast installing broadband networks and phone systems. After a few years, I decided to relocate from Aberdeen to Glasgow, and that move ultimately led me to Aspen Solutions.
What does a typical day in your role look like, and what do you enjoy most about it?
No two days are the same. I might be managing a project, installing a phone system, or setting up a new leased line circuit for a customer. I really enjoy the fast-paced nature of the role and the opportunity to work with such a wide range of customers and suppliers.
What’s been your most memorable moment or achievement at Aspen Solutions so far?
A standout moment for me was being involved in bringing the Marriott Hotel franchise properties on board last year. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, but seeing what we achieved collectively as a team was incredibly rewarding.
What skills or qualities do you think are essential for success in your role?
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under time pressure are essential. Things don’t always go to plan, so being able to think on your feet and adapt quickly is a big part of the job.
How would you describe the culture at Aspen Solutions, and what makes it a great place to work?
Aspen Solutions has a genuinely supportive and positive culture. Everyone wants to see each other succeed, and if someone is facing a challenge, the team is always ready to step in and help find a way forward.
What advice would you give to someone looking to build a career in your field?
If you have a genuine interest in technology and a willingness to keep learning, you’ll thrive in this field. Explore different areas (networking, Microsoft 365, telephony, server work) and you’ll naturally find the path that suits you best.
When you’re not at work, how do you like to unwind and relax?
Outside of work, I’m usually at the gym training for my next fitness challenge, or at home spending quality time with my partner and daughter.
